2005 Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc – Clarksburg, CA

Finds from the Vine

January 11, 2006

David Stare founded Dry Creek Vineyard in 1972 after an inspiring trip to the Loire Valley in France. His 2005 Chenin Blanc improves on the French model, showing dry peach, orange peel, Fuji apple, and a touch of pink grapefruit. This crisp white finishes with a spicy mineral hit and only a half-percent residual sugar, keeping this wine clean and dry. Winemaker Bill Knuttel ferments and ages this wine in stainless steel tanks, although “ages” may be the wrong word: the 2005 was released in December of 2005. The grapes are grown in Clarksburg, a small appellation near Sacramento.

This dry chenin blanc is perfect for sushi and other light, spicy food. Also try this wine with light salads, shrimp or clams, and goat cheese. The lovely ship on the label reflects founder David Stare’s passion for sailing.
